@angelynpeh DOES #INSPIREDBYSOUND TAKEOVER, September 18, 2015

Whenever we can, we have photographers takeover our Instagram page for a weekend to talk music and show how their photography is #InspiredBySound. This past weekend we had Angelyn Peh takeover. See either our feed or below on how music inspires her photography.

Hello everyone, I’m Angelyn and I’ll be taking over the Grado account this weekend for #InspiredBySound! I’m an artist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and music is what helps get me in the mood to create – sometimes even providing the subject for the art. Over the weekend, I’ll be sharing about my favourite music and how it inspires me, be it while traveling or just in everyday life. This Friday night, I’m winding down after a week of work with “Swimming In The Flood” and “Moth’s Wings” by Passion Pit. There’s just something about those songs that transport me back in time to a room with dim lighting, wide open windows and cool air, and long conversations. And that’s the best Friday night feeling I could ask for. – @angelynpeh x #InspiredBySound

As an artist, I’m not always sure of what I want to create beyond a vague feeling that it has to be sprawling, eternal, and intimate all at once. It’s perfect vignettes like these – perfect moments in time – that help to sharpen the image and translate that feeling for me, if only for a little while. I found this particular moment in New Zealand, tall grasses moving in the wind as though the cat bus was nearby, “Jupiter” by Sleeping At Last in my ears. I’m not the best at retaining memories, but the moments I remember the clearest were always accompanied by what was the perfect song for the occasion. – @angelynpeh x #InspiredBySound

I like to think that whatever I was listening to while working on art will seep into the piece itself. The music queue is always changing, from Anberlin to CHVRCHES to Of Monsters And Men, but one of my favourites that I keep coming back to is Sara Bareilles’s EP, Once Upon Another Time. From the titular first song to the last, “Bright Lights And Cityscapes”, her music offers every emotion I want to capture in my art: wistfulness, frustration, and hope. – @angelynpeh x #InspiredBySound

I listened to a lot of Daughter in Thailand, especially “Tomorrow” performed live from their 4AD Session EP. My Bangkok memories always come back to me tinted golden and dusty, with the sun on my bare shoulders and the thought of Elena Tonra, Igor Haefeli, and Remi Aguilella bundled in scarfs and surrounded by orchestra players, filling the space in a studio in London with songs about the cold and loneliness, “by tomorrow we’ll be lost amongst the leaves / in a wind that chills the skeletons of trees” sung in soft voices that must have frosted the windows. – @angelynpeh x #InspiredBySound

If there was a song that could transport me back to literally any time in my life, it would be “Field” by Keaton Henson. It reminds me of poring over Pauline Baynes’s Prince Caspian illustrations in the soft predawn light when I was seven, watching the 2005 Pride and Prejudice at two in the morning with only the soft glow from a single lamp. And I absolutely love how my SR80es pick up on the sound of Ren Ford’s bow against the cello strings, the creaking of shifting on seats, and the subtle pizzicato towards the middle of the song. – @angelynpeh x #InspiredBySound

I used to study grade eight classical piano, but then I discovered my love for bass guitar in an unlikely place: Milford Sound on Christmas Day in New Zealand. I can’t recall if my plan was to spend the whole day listening to Howard Shore (it probably was), but as it turned out, I discovered the six minute epic “Push It” by Duologue, an underrated British band, and couldn’t get the bass lines out of my head. I’ve been hooked to the instrument ever since, and have the fondest memories of meeting it at the bottom of the world, in the most beautiful place. – @angelynpeh x #InspiredBySound

Planning for a trip to New York next month with the perfect song for the occasion: “New York” by BOY. And with that, I’ll be signing off Thanks to @tiameghan and @jongrado for inviting me to contribute, to @gradolabs for their brilliant headphones, and to you for following along! – @angelynpeh x #InspiredBySound
